While in modern times Syria is sadly better known for the brutal and constant civil war, which has claimed millions of lives, the country has a rich and extensive history as one of the Middle East’s most fascinating and beautiful countries. A diverse melting pot of cultures, Syria’s history stretches back to the time of antiquity while its capital city Damascus played a major role during the heyday of the Silk Road. Scattered across the country are a number of the Middle East’s most spectacular ruins from various points in history although their status remains ambiguous during the Fog of War.
