In 1975, shortly after Portugal’s colonial rule weakened due to the Carnation Revolution, East Timor declared independence. However, Indonesia invaded in December 1975, leading to a violent occupation that lasted until 1999. The occupation resulted in significant loss of life and human rights abuses. Throughout the Indonesian occupation, resistance movements emerged, the most notable being the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN). The international community, particularly after the 1991 Santa Cruz massacre, began to take notice of the situation. In 1999, following years of negotiation and international pressure, a UN-sponsored referendum was held. The people of East Timor overwhelmingly voted for independence. However, this triggered violent reprisals from pro-Indonesian militias, leading to widespread destruction and displacement. After the violence, the United Nations intervened, administering East Timor until it officially became an independent nation on May 20, 2002. Since gaining independence, East Timor has faced challenges including political instability, economic difficulties, and the need for infrastructure development. However, it has made strides in building its governance and democratic institutions.. The nation is rich in natural resources and has the potential for growth, particularly in tourism and agriculture.
